Carol Steckel Appointed Medicaid Director for North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services

On January 10, 2013, Carol Steckel, a member of the inaugural Medicaid Leadership Class of 2010 was appointed director of the Division of Medical Assistance for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. Ms. Steckel previously served as Louisiana’s Medicaid director from 2003-2010 and most recently was the director of the Center for Health Care Innovation at the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals. In announcing the appointment, North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Secretary Aldona Wos noted “Ms. Steckel has an extensive background in health policy and government, having served as commissioner of the Alabama Medicaid Agency and spearheading the state of Louisiana’s response to the Affordable Care Act. I am so pleased that she will be bringing her energy, enthusiasm, and considerable talent to the department as we strive to become more efficient, more effective and more accountable to our consumers.”
